Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Anus,
I hope you are doing well. It has been a long period of time since we last spoke.
I am writing to let you know about a broken crockery set, I found after you left my place.
To begin with some information about my precious crockery set. My mother gifted me that at my wedding. It was made of expensive ceramic material and the edges of every piece painted with gold water. My mother imported that set from Japan because I am passionate about precious kitchen crockery.
Another thing I wanted to share with you is that crockery is valuable for me because I love my mom and when I used that set, I felt my mom is with me. Furthermore, you know I came abroad after marriage and my family is living in Pakistan, so small things are sometimes very important for me like that set.
Ultimately, I had only that set which I was using at my home. Now, I cannot use this broken utensils. I would appreciate if you could buy a new crokery set for me.
I look forward to your response.
Best wishes,
Kinza Latif

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points: you identify the broken crockery set, explain its sentimental value because it was a gift from your mother and reminds you of her, and ask your friend to replace it. These details make your purpose clear and maintain a suitable, generally polite tone. The explanation that you live abroad while your family is in Pakistan adds relevant context. To make the ideas more fully developed, describe the damage more specifically—for example, how many pieces broke or which pieces were affected—and make the request more considerate by asking your friend to discuss replacing it or contributing to the cost. The response is complete and relevant, though some details and the final request could be developed more carefully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: opening, description of the set, explanation of its personal importance, request, and closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and phrases such as “Furthermore” and “Ultimately” signal relationships between ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical, particularly “To begin with some information” and “Another thing I wanted to share with you.” The sentence beginning “Ultimately” also moves abruptly from the set’s importance to the request. Use more natural links and clearer references—for instance, connect the family context directly to why the set matters, then introduce the request with a tactful transition. This would make the progression smoother and cohesion less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “precious,” “imported,” “passionate,” and “valuable,” and the reader can understand the central message. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “expensive ceramic material.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “crockery set” is repeated often, “gold water” does not clearly describe the decoration, and “broken utensils” is not the most natural reference to the set. The spelling “crokery” is also incorrect. Choose precise, natural expressions such as “gold-painted edges,” “dinnerware set,” and “replace the damaged pieces.” These improvements would make the description clearer and show more controlled vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “because I love my mom” and the sentence about living abroad while your family remains in Pakistan. Meaning is generally clear, and several sentences are accurately formed. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “I found after you left my place,” the relative clause needs a clearer structure, such as “that I found after you left.” In “the edges of every piece painted,” a verb is missing; write “the edges of every piece were painted.” The phrase “I would appreciate if” also needs “it” after “appreciate,” and “I felt my mom is with me” would be more consistent as “I feel as though my mom is with me.” More accurate clause construction and tense control would strengthen the letter.
