Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Amrit,

Hi, how's going. i am this letter to ask about my flower pot which i found broken. I saw it in the garbage bin .

It was a white marble flower pot with pink flowers. There were white stripes on the pot as well as golden stripe in the bootom. I kept it on my study table. I was totally shocked , when i didn't find it on my table.

This flower pot was really close to my heart because it gifted by my father on my 18th birthday. It always helps me reduce my stress level and aids to get enough energy to focus on studies. Apart from it, everytime when i see it, i was reminding that movement which i spent with my family.

Could you please let me know how it happened? I would like you to come to my house and we should discuss about this mistake and i'll let know you from where should be buy new one.

Looking for your answer.

With regards,

Pram

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: the pot is described as white marble with pink flowers and stripes, you explain its connection to your father and 18th birthday, and you ask your friend to discuss what happened and help choose a replacement. The personal details make the letter relevant and give it a clear purpose. However, the request is not fully clear: “we should discuss about this mistake” does not specify what action you expect your friend to take, and “I’ll let know you from where should be buy new one” is difficult to understand. Explain directly whether you want an apology, help replacing the pot, or payment for it. The main ideas are present, but some are less fully developed or precise than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the broken pot, describe it, explain its sentimental value, and then make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and the closing is appropriate for a personal letter. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. “Apart from it” does not clearly connect the pot’s calming effect with the memory of your family, while “I saw it in the garbage bin” and the later account of not finding it on the table could be ordered more clearly. The final request also combines several ideas in a confusing sentence. Use clearer transitions and separate the explanation of what happened from the specific action you want your friend to take.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to describe the object and explain your feelings, including “white marble flower pot,” “golden stripe,” and “reduce my stress level.” These details help the reader picture the item and understand its importance. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “close to my heart,” “aids to get enough energy,” and “that movement which I spent with my family.” Spelling errors such as “bootom” and “everytime” also reduce accuracy. The range is adequate for the task, but greater control of natural phrases would make the letter clearer and more fluent. Practise collocations for memories, emotional value, and asking someone to replace or repair an item.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, for example, “This flower pot was really close to my heart because it gifted by my father on my 18th birthday.” The use of a reason clause shows some range, but errors in sentence construction and verb forms are noticeable and sometimes make meaning unclear. Examples include “Hi, how’s going,” “i am this letter to ask,” “because it gifted,” and “I’ll let know you from where should be buy new one.” Tense also shifts in “everytime when i see it, i was reminding.” Review complete sentence patterns, auxiliary verbs, articles, and consistent tense. More accurate control of these structures would make your message easier to follow.
