Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sarah,

I hope you did not find any difficulty staying at my house while I was on a one week trip. However, I am writing this letter to formally inform you that when I returned home, I noticed that one of my most favourite car showpiece was broken.

Additional, the left side of the front wheel was left over on the floor as it is. It may seem just a toy to you, but for me this is a valuable gift given by my grandfather on my fifth birthday and since today I have taken utmost care. A day after my birthday he left this world and in his remembrance I have a deep attachment with this possession.

Afterall, I request you to kindly come with me to visit a shop that will help to repair the broken wheel, anytime according to your convenient time.

Thank you for your consideration and co-operation.

Yours friendly,

Yesha Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you identify the broken car showpiece, explain its sentimental value as a gift from your grandfather, and ask Sarah to accompany you to a repair shop. The personal detail about your grandfather’s death makes the importance of the possession clear and gives the letter an appropriate, sincere purpose. The request is also understandable, though it could be more specific about what you expect Sarah to do—for example, whether she should help arrange or pay for the repair. The description of the damage is brief, and the opening comment about her stay is not developed. More detail on these points would make the response more fully developed while retaining its relevant focus.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the problem, explain the item’s significance, and then make a request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and the closing is appropriate. Some connections between ideas are less smooth, however. “Additional” does not work naturally as a transition into the description of the damage, while “Afterall” introduces the request abruptly. The reference in “the left side of the front wheel was left over on the floor as it is” is also difficult to follow. Use straightforward links such as “Also” or “As a result,” and make the relationship between the broken wheel and the showpiece explicit. This would make cohesion less mechanical and the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and its emotional significance, including “valuable gift,” “remembrance,” and “deep attachment.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “formally inform” and “utmost care,” although some choices are unnatural or imprecise. “Car showpiece” may not clearly convey the object to every reader, and “left over on the floor” does not accurately describe a detached wheel. Phrases such as “most favourite” and “according to your convenient time” also show some difficulty with natural collocation and word form. Choose simpler, precise expressions where needed, and check that formal language sounds natural in a personal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the sentence explaining that the showpiece was a gift and the sentence describing your attachment to it. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “one of my most favourite car showpiece was broken” has problems with the plural construction after “one of,” and “on a one week trip” needs a correctly formed compound modifier. In “since today I have taken utmost care,” the time expression does not fit the intended meaning. Review article use, plural forms, and tense choices, and break up the longer sentence about your grandfather so that its relationships are clearer. These changes would improve accuracy without requiring more complex structures.
