Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am one of your tenants who lives in apartment number:404 in Rai Colony. I am writing this letter to address some problems which I am encountering while living here.

I rented this apartment last month and fulfilled all the formalities along with it I completed all the paper work, but within a month, I have started facing certain problems, first of all, the paint of my room has started peeling off, also the tap of my bathroom has started leaking, though I called the plumber to repair it, but he is asking me to change the tap, and I cannot do the same without seeking your permission.

Sir it is high time now to do repair work of bathroom, also painting is required to be done as soon as possible, because my room gives foul smell, when I come back from my work.

I want you to personally visit my apartment, and check the situation. In the coming week, I will be having off from my office, so I will take care of the room when its renovation would be done. I hope you will understand my problem and take the required action.

Thanking you.

Yours sincerely,

Priyanka kapoor

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described (peeling paint and a leaking tap), a solution is proposed (repairing the bathroom and painting), and a request for a visit is clearly made. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are relevant and developed sufficiently to meet the task requirements. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left in no doubt about the nature of the issues or the desired outcome. The response is well-structured and covers all necessary information effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'first of all', 'also', and 'in the coming week' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific details and finally the request for action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, ensuring a coherent flow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the context of a formal complaint. Phrases like 'fulfilling all the formalities' and 'seeking your permission' demonstrate a good grasp of formal register. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'I will be having off from my office' (should be 'I will have time off') and 'take care of the room' (which is slightly vague). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as comma splices ('...peeling off, also the tap...') and minor errors in article usage and verb tense consistency. For instance, 'I will be having off' is non-standard. Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are slightly run-on. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the writer demonstrates a reasonable level of control over sentence construction, which is consistent with a band 6.5 performance.
