Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to let you know about some of the major problems that i am facing in my apartment from last two weeks. Furthermore, the tap is broken and all the water is logging on the floor, coackroaches and mice are in the kitchen area.

In my perspective, to overcome this issue the deep cleaning should be done. the one technician should be arranged to fix the tap problem. to solve the problem of coackroaches i cleaned the rooms and kitchen but nothing works, so this problem can be resolved by only dung cleaners.

You can visit the apartment on weekend as i can be at home and you can see all the problems that i am facing from last couple of weeks. with the help of deep cleaning we can resolve the problem of coackroaches and mice.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the tap and pests, the explanation of the solutions is quite brief. To improve, try to elaborate slightly more on the impact of these issues to demonstrate a more professional and persuasive tone. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In my perspective' to link ideas. However, the transition between the problem description and the proposed solution could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural rather than relying on simple sentence starters.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. You use some specific terms like 'technician' and 'deep cleaning'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'water is logging' (should be 'pooling' or 'leaking') and 'dung cleaners' (which is unclear and likely incorrect). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'coackroaches'. To improve, focus on learning more precise collocations related to household maintenance and ensure you check your spelling for common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'from last two weeks' (should be 'for the last two weeks') and 'the one technician' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here). You also have issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on tense consistency and article usage will help you achieve a higher score.
