Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Vaishali Juneja, I live in apartment number 408. I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the issue I am facing in the flat.

Kitchen tap is not working properly from last two days. There is hardly any water coming from the tap. I tried fixing it from my side by cleaning the pipe, but unfortunately was unsuccessful. None of the steps worked.

I would really appreciate, if you could send someone to repair this tap as soon as possible. As it is hard to wash the dishes in the dishwasher everyday. This is subsequently increasing my electricity bill as well.

I hope my letter was instrumental in expressing my issue. Looking forward for your positive response.

Your faithfully,

Vaishali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the response is 134 words, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, the brevity prevents a more thorough explanation of the situation or a more professional closing. To improve, you should expand on the impact of the problem and provide more specific details regarding your availability for the requested visit.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'unfortunately' and 'subsequently' to link ideas. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas flows more naturally. For example, the transition between the problem description and the request for a visit could be smoother by using a more sophisticated introductory phrase.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate the problem clearly. You use some functional phrases like 'express my concern' and 'instrumental in expressing'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor errors in collocation, such as 'fixing it from my side' (should be 'fixing it myself') and 'looking forward for' (should be 'looking forward to'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a slightly broader range of vocabulary related to home maintenance and formal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'from last two days' (should be 'for the last two days') and 'As it is hard to wash the dishes' (this is a sentence fragment). Additionally, 'Your faithfully' is incorrect; it should be 'Yours faithfully'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and main verb.
