Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Building Manager,

I am writing to inform you about an urgent issue with the plumbing around my kitchen area.

For the past three days, the kitchen sink has been severely leaking from the pipe underneath. Water is constantly pooling on the cabinet floor, causing a persistent bad odor and risking damage to the floorboards. Its also creating mess and its stick around whole pipe which create bad smell so its hard to work in kitchen.

I believe the worn-out rubber seal or damaged pipe needs to be replaced immediately to prevent further water damage. Additionally, a qualified plumber should inspect the drainage system to ensure there are no deeper blockages causing this pressure buildup.

Could you please arrange a visit to my apartment at your earliest convenience to inspect the problem in person? I am available every afternoon after 2:00 PM.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Harsh patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the plumbing issue, suggest a logical solution (replacing the seal or pipe), and request a visit from the manager. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all sentences contribute to the clarity of the message; for instance, the description of the smell could be more concise to maintain a professional tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'For the past three days' to link ideas. However, the transition between the description of the problem and the proposed solution could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall flow is logical, though the use of cohesive devices is somewhat standard rather than sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, using terms like 'persistent bad odor,' 'qualified plumber,' and 'pressure buildup.' There are some minor issues with word choice and phrasing, such as 'its stick around whole pipe,' which is slightly unnatural. While you successfully communicate the problem, incorporating a few more precise collocations or less common lexical items would elevate the response. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for the highest bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, particularly with punctuation and contractions, such as 'Its also creating mess' (should be 'It is' or 'It's') and missing articles ('in kitchen' should be 'in the kitchen'). These errors are minor and do not cause confusion, but they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of formal punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
