Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to let you know about the problem that I am facing big trouble in the building regarding the leakage that needs repairing.

Firstly I would like to highlight about the leakage which apparently is creating a big mess all around. I talked to the neighbor's regarding this issue noticing if they are facing the same issue but they told me the pipe in my section got busted and needs the repairing as soon as possible.

I believe that the section of the pipe needs cleaning too which is the main cause the pipe got busted. The plumber needs to visit the building. Actually the chimney in my kitchen is not working properly and regardless I have to face the consequences. The proper renovation is required for my apartment.

Therefore, could you please visit the apartment and check all the root cause regarding the problems occurring. I tried to contact the plumber but no one responded to my call. Hoping to see the positive reply. I will be highly thankful o you.

Thank you

Ridhima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The mention of the kitchen chimney appears suddenly and is not clearly linked to the primary issue of the pipe leakage, which makes the request for 'proper renovation' feel slightly disjointed. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the tone is occasionally informal and lacks the professional polish expected in a formal letter to a building manager. To improve, ensure that all details provided are directly relevant to the main problem described to maintain a cohesive focus.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the pipe issue and the kitchen chimney is abrupt, lacking a logical connector to bridge these two distinct problems. While the progression of ideas is generally understandable, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall logical flow between sentences could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. Phrases like 'big trouble', 'big mess', and 'got busted' are informal and repetitive. The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'leakage' and 'renovation', but the overall range is limited. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'noticing if they are facing' (instead of 'asking if they were experiencing') and 'o you' (a typo for 'to you'). To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise, formal collocations suitable for a professional complaint letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the pipe in my section got busted and needs the repairing' (article usage) and 'check all the root cause' (pluralization error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'regardless I have to face the consequences', which is grammatically unclear in this context. The student demonstrates a basic control of grammar, but frequent minor errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy.
