Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Apartment Manager,

I hope life treats you well. I have a great concern regarding the apartment. I do not know about the other members of society, but I have a concern regarding the drainage system and hot water. The water gets stuck in the washroom as well as in the kitchen sinks. Apart from this, hot water does not come through the taps. These problems create other issues; due to the Drainage system, diseases are spread around us, and maybe it is mixed with the clean water. I request you to please solve this problem. if you want to see these problems, you can visit anytime. My holiday is going onm so i do not have work to do. I am always at home.

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which limits the development of ideas. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, but the content is quite brief. To improve, you should expand on the impact of the issues and provide more specific details regarding your availability or the urgency of the repairs. Because the length requirement was not met, the score is penalized accordingly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into a single block of text, which makes it difficult to follow. A formal letter should be structured with clear paragraphing: an introduction stating the purpose, a body paragraph detailing the issues and solutions, and a concluding paragraph with a call to action. While the ideas are logically sequenced, the lack of paragraphing and the limited use of cohesive devices (such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition') make the flow feel somewhat mechanical and disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is functional and allows for clear communication, but it is somewhat repetitive and basic. Phrases like 'I have a concern' are used twice in close proximity, and 'solve this problem' is a bit simplistic. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'members of society' (which sounds unnatural in this context; 'other tenants' would be better) and 'diseases are spread around us'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology related to property maintenance and formal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'My holiday is going onm' (spelling/typo), 'i do not have work to do' (capitalization), and 'due to the Drainage system' (unnecessary capitalization). Additionally, the sentence 'I do not know about the other members of society' is slightly awkward. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors and the lack of varied, error-free complex structures prevent a higher score.
