Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you about a problem in my apartment that requires immediate attention. I lived in Apartment 442, for the past 2 weeks, there has been a serious water leak from the ceiling in my bathroom. The water drips continuously , making the floor wet and slippery. It has also caused damp patches on the ceiling and side walls. I am worried that the problem may become worse if it is not repaired soon.

I believe the leak should be inspected and repaired as soon as possible. It would also be helpful if the damaged wall could be checked for any structural issues after the leak has been fixed.

I urge you to come and visit my apartment at your earliest convenience to see problems for yourself. I am usually available after 5:00 pm on weekdays and any time on weekend. Please let me know in advance so that I can be at home.

Thank you for your time and assistance I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the water leak, suggest that the wall be checked for structural damage, and request a visit from the manager. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the situation described. You have provided sufficient detail to ensure the reader understands the urgency of the problem, which meets the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher in terms of task coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the description of the problem to the proposed solution and finally the request for a meeting. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'It has also' and 'Therefore' (implied) effectively. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly, but the current structure is perfectly adequate for a formal letter of this nature.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'requires immediate attention', 'structural issues', and 'earliest convenience' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the 'less common' items or idiomatic collocations that would push the score into the 8.0 range. However, the language used is precise and fits the task requirements well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are accurate, though there are a few minor errors, such as 'I lived in Apartment 442' (should be 'I have been living') and 'any time on weekend' (should be 'on the weekend'). Punctuation is generally good, although there is a missing period after 'assistance' in the final paragraph. Despite these minor slips, the meaning is never in doubt, and the grammatical control is strong enough to support clear communication throughout the letter.
