Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Building Manager,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to draw your attention towards the issue arises in my apartment number 18 at 24 Roleika Drive.

To begin with, I have been facing a water leakage in my living room since two weeks. Furthermore, there is a crack on the roof that allows leakage and unfortunately ruined my furniture as well as the rug underneath my couch which eventually causing inconvenience and loss to me and my family. In addition, we are not able to utilize our living space conveniently.

In context to this, I tried calling the roofing company provided by the directory of management but I am not able to reach out to them. Moreover, I would request you to resolve this matter and send the technician to repair the cracks as soon as possible as I am having an important event coming next week at my place. Apart from that, I would appreciate if I could receive the reimbursement for the damage of my furniture as per the policy of apartment. At last, It would be more convenient if you could visit my apartment to personally investigate the scenario to avoid further problems.

Thank you for your time for considering my request, looking forward to your prompt response.

Yours Faithfully,

Parneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the water leakage and roof crack, suggest a repair, and request a site visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the mention of the upcoming event and the request for reimbursement, which adds a sense of urgency and realism to the task. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and all requirements are met in a professional manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, they effectively guide the reader through the narrative. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem description from the requested actions. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the leakage and the resulting damage is clearly articulated.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint. Phrases like 'draw your attention towards', 'eventually causing inconvenience', and 'personally investigate the scenario' show a good command of language. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'issue arises' (should be 'issue that has arisen') and 'reimbursement for the damage of my furniture' (should be 'damage to my furniture'). However, these errors do not impede communication and the vocabulary is sufficiently precise for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'since two weeks' (should be 'for two weeks') and 'event coming next week' (should be 'event coming up next week'). Additionally, 'It would be more convenient if you could visit' is a well-constructed complex sentence. While there are occasional errors in tense and preposition usage, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate throughout the letter.
