Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Khan,
I hope you're doing well. I'm writing to express my concern about some issues in my apartment that need your attention.
There are some problems I am facing in the kitchen area. The electric oven is not functioning well. While using it for first time, I realized that the oven automatically closes after running for 5 minutes. I tried to restart the machine but problem still persists. In addition, there is an active leak in the sink. I noticed the leakage is so intense that it made the floor wet. I have sealed the leak with duct tape and put the bucket on the floor to minimize the overflow as a temporary solution.
I would appreciate it if you could send technician to fix those problems. Also, kindly let me know when they can come so that I can be at home. Alternatively, I would be happy if you can change the entire oven to a new one.
I will also kindly request you to visit my apartment and inspect yourself. I hope you will take this matter with outmost urgency and provide me solutions as earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Adam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the problems with the oven and the sink, suggested a solution (repair or replacement), and requested a site visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the letter maintains a consistent, professional tone. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body details the issues, and the final paragraph makes the requests. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Alternatively', and 'Also' to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your points clearly. Phrases like 'functioning well', 'active leak', and 'utmost urgency' are used correctly. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'put the bucket' (should be 'a bucket') and 'at earliest convenience' (should be 'at your earliest convenience'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the context of a formal request.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are some minor grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('send technician' instead of 'send a technician') and a slight error in 'inspect yourself' (should be 'inspect it yourself'), the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is good, and your meaning is always clear. The grammar is sufficient to support the professional tone of the letter.
