Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr Adam,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to request a reparation for the washroom door that has been broken since three days.
First and foremost, my daughter got stuck in the washroom, so I damaged the door while trying to help her and now I am unable to close it and I need to repair it as soon as possible for privacy purposes. I would like to replace the door’s lock and restore and paint the door. Do not worry about the equipments I have everything you need to fix the damaged door.
I would appreciate it if you could investigate this matter and visit the apartment whenever you’re available. I am free everyday after 4 in the evening. However, If you would like to schedule a time just let me know when you can come.
Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Abed el Aziz Jamal el Dine.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described, a solution is proposed, and a request for a visit is made. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are clearly presented, and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively. No information is missing, and the development of the ideas is sufficient for the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'However', and 'Therefore' (implied) are used to connect ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem description from the request for a visit. The flow of information is smooth, and the reader can easily follow the sequence of events and the subsequent request. The use of referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, though there are some minor inaccuracies. For instance, 'reparation' is used where 'repair' would be more natural in this context. The phrase 'restore and paint' is clear, but 'refurbish' might be more precise. The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey their meaning clearly, including terms like 'privacy purposes' and 'investigate this matter'. While there is no highly sophisticated or idiomatic language, the lexical range is adequate for the requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'since three days' (should be 'for three days') and 'everyday' (should be 'every day'). Additionally, 'equipments' is an uncountable noun and should be 'equipment'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. The use of punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence variety is sufficient to maintain the reader's interest and demonstrate a reasonable level of control over English grammar.
