Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you the issue I am facing in my apartment and needs repair.

There is persistant leak coming from the cieling in the master bathroom, over the past few days water is continously dripping whenever the upper unit use the shower. As a result, big crack occur in ceiling and peeling paint.

I believe this issue occur due to faulty seal or broken pipe right above my unit. To resolve this issue, proper inspection should be done by plumber and fix it as soon as possible. In addition, I would appreciate if you could fix the ceilng and redone the paint at the same time.

I kindly request you to visit my appartment at your convenience, my wife will show you the whole issue which we are currently facing.

I would like to appreciate your consideration to this matter.

Your faithfully,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the persistent leak, suggest a professional inspection and repair, and invite the manager to visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor grammatical errors do not distract from the clarity of your request, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: introduction, description of the problem, proposed solution, and the request for a visit. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As a result,' 'In addition,' and 'To resolve this issue,' which help the flow of the text. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'the issue' could be more explicitly linked to the previous sentence to enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'persistent,' 'faulty,' and 'at your convenience.' However, there are some spelling errors ('cieling' instead of 'ceiling,' 'appartment' instead of 'apartment') and minor collocation issues ('redone the paint' should be 'repainted' or 'redo the painting'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent a higher score. Focusing on accurate spelling and more natural collocations will help you achieve a higher band in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing to inform you the issue' (missing 'of'), 'big crack occur' (should be 'a big crack has occurred'), and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). While these errors are noticeable, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will also help elevate your score.
