Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to inform you about a problem in my apartment that requires urgent attention.
Over the past week, there has been a serious water leak from the ceiling in my bathroom. The water drips continuously, making the floor slippery and causing damage to the paint and walls. I am worried that if the issue is not fixed soon, it may become more serious and affect other parts of the appointment.
I believe the plumbing system should be inspected, and the damaged pipe or ceiling should be repaired as soon as possible. It would also be helpful if the affected area could be repainted after repair work.
Could you please visit my apartment at your earliest convenience to inspect the problem yourself? Please let me know your suitable time for you visit so that I could also be available at that time.
I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the water leak, suggest a logical course of action (inspection and repair), and formally request a site visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. There are no omissions, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem description to the proposed solution and finally the request for a visit. Cohesive devices such as 'Over the past week', 'if the issue is not fixed', and 'It would also be helpful' are used effectively to link sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter flows naturally from the opening to the closing salutation.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal complaint. Phrases like 'urgent attention', 'at your earliest convenience', and 'affected area' are used accurately. There is one minor error where you used 'appointment' instead of 'apartment', which is a slip rather than a lack of vocabulary range. Overall, the language is precise and fits the formal register required for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There is a slight awkwardness in the phrase 'let me know your suitable time for you visit', which should be 'let me know a suitable time for your visit'. However, this does not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and verb tenses is strong, contributing to the overall clarity of the message.
