Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Kunle

I am Godson Francis and I am the tenant occupying flat 10 at the building in no 9, Ajaccio Street.

I am writing to inform you of a particular situation that I am currently experiencing in my flat.

Recently, I discovered that the heater in the living room is no longer working and as a result, my apartment has been so cold for about two days now.At first, I felt it was to due to the lower electrical current we had but I have also tried to power the heating system with my generator but it still won't work.

I am of the opinion that the heater should be serviced since it's been a while. I am convinced that if we can get the installation company to come check it, the issue could be resolved.

I would be very excited if you can come to my apartment to exprience the situation for yourself and see how quickly we can solve the problem.

I look for to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Godson Francis

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the problem with the heater, suggest a logical solution (servicing by the installation company), and invite the manager to visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the response maintains a consistent focus throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'as a result' and 'at first', which help connect your ideas. However, the flow could be slightly improved by using a wider variety of linking words to transition between sentences. Overall, the structure is sound and the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'occupying flat 10' and 'serviced' are appropriate for the context. There are a few minor issues, such as 'exprience' (spelling) and 'look for to' (grammatical error in collocation). While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would push the score into the higher bands. The word choice is generally precise enough to avoid any confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if we can get the installation company to come check it'. While there are some grammatical slips—specifically 'to due to' (redundant preposition) and 'I look for to' (missing 'forward')—these errors do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. To improve, ensure you proofread for small prepositional errors and verb tense consistency. Your punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout the letter.
