Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Thomas,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to you seeking immediate attention to get our bath tub fixed. Every time one of us takes a shower, the water gets clogged within five minutes of turning the shower on. It has become an ongoing issue.

We have tried everything we could. We have tried cleaning the pipes, inserting a long stick so that the pipes gets clear incase there is anything stuck inside, seems fine when we do that, because there is no blockage as such that can be felt, but the problem still arises.

I have tried coming in to the office and raising a complaint, but they keep making some excuses about you not being present and that there is a procedure to follow. I just happened to find your email address in one of the notices and you are my last hope. As building manager, I request you to come n visit our apartment to see and assess the problem, and help us find a solution for this.

Thankyou,

Chandni Bandaru.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described, a solution is implied through the request for a visit, and the manager is asked to inspect the apartment. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the failed attempts to fix the issue and the frustration regarding previous office interactions. The response is fully relevant to the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the description of the problem from the history of the complaint and the final request. Cohesive devices such as 'Every time', 'because', and 'As building manager' are used appropriately to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the reader can easily follow the narrative of the issue and the writer's desired outcome.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and conveys the message clearly. Phrases like 'immediate attention', 'ongoing issue', and 'assess the problem' are appropriate for a formal letter. There are some minor informalities, such as 'n' instead of 'and' and 'bath tub' (often written as one word or hyphenated), but these do not impede communication. The range is adequate to express the situation with enough precision to be understood by the recipient.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'pipes gets clear' (subject-verb agreement) and 'incase' (should be two words: 'in case'). Additionally, the sentence 'seems fine when we do that' lacks a clear subject. However, these errors are non-systematic and do not cause confusion. The majority of the sentences are clear and grammatically sound, showing a good level of control for a general task.
