Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to give you information on the faulty tap in my kitchen that needs to be repaired

The tap in my kitchen has been faulty for a while now. The lock has broken so the tap drops water after turning it off, and this has been making my kitchen look messy and wet.

Moreover, I believe the solution to this problem is that the tap should be changed totally instead of being repaired to avoid same issue from reoccurring.

Furthermore, I would like you to please visit my apartment to examine this problem so as to offer a lasting solution to it because this has been giving me sleepless night.

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

ogunlana nurat.

Overall6.0

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which limits the development of ideas. While the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, the brevity prevents the student from fully expanding on the impact of the issue or providing more specific details, which is necessary for a higher band score. To improve, the student should elaborate more on the consequences of the problem and provide more context to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is clear. The student uses basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical, and the overall structure is quite simple due to the short length of the text. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim for more varied and sophisticated linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. Phrases like 'faulty tap' and 'lasting solution' are appropriate. However, the range is limited, and there is some repetition of basic terms. The student uses 'totally' in a way that is slightly informal for a formal letter. To improve, the student should incorporate a wider range of vocabulary, including more precise collocations and less common lexical items, while ensuring they are used in the correct formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'avoid same issue' (missing an article) and 'sleepless night' (should be plural 'nights'). Punctuation is generally functional, though the closing lacks a comma after 'Kind regards'. While the errors do not impede communication, the range of structures is limited. To improve, the student should focus on article usage, pluralization, and incorporating more complex sentence forms with greater accuracy.
