Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to apprise you that several issues I have been experiencing in my apartment, number 345, that require immediate action.
Firstly, there is water leak from ceiling in the bathroom, which disrupts my daily routine. In addition, the heating system has not been working from 2 weeks, resulting in an uncomfortable cold environment in my home. It is impacting my health and overall well-being.
I kindly request you to arrange for a thorough inspection of both the plumbing and heating systems at your earliest convenience. This action would not only improve my living conditions but also maintain the integrity of the building.
Thank you for your attention on these issues and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of your ideas. While the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, the brevity prevents you from fully expanding on the impact of the issues or providing more specific details that would make the request more persuasive. To improve, ensure you elaborate on each point to meet the length requirement, as this is a key component of the task instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear opening, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'In addition' to transition between ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you should aim for a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. Currently, the structure is functional but somewhat mechanical, and the limited length restricts the opportunity to demonstrate more sophisticated linking techniques.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'apprise', 'disrupts', and 'integrity'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'water leak from ceiling' (missing an article: 'a water leak from the ceiling') and 'working from 2 weeks' (should be 'for 2 weeks'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common English collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific descriptive terms would enhance your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to apprise you that several issues... that require immediate action.' There are a few grammatical slips, such as the missing article in 'water leak from ceiling' and the incorrect preposition in 'working from 2 weeks'. Additionally, the first sentence is slightly awkward in its construction. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage. While your meaning is clear, more consistent accuracy in complex structures is needed for a higher band.
