Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. John,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding the issue I have been facing in your apartment. I am Mahima. I am living in 35B Fountainhead road, Apartment No.2C.
The main obstacle is that there is leakage in waterpipe of my building. Due to this, I have been facing several difficulties in my daily routine. Water is leaking continuously, which caused inconvenience and may also damage the property. I would appreciate it if the maintenance team could repair the water pipeline as soon as possible to prevent further problem. From my perspective, Plumber should visit here by and solve the issue in earliest convenience.
Furthermore, Could you please also visit our building to introduce this issue because your support is essential to resolve this problem as well as positive result.
Thank you for your understanding. Your prompt response would be greatly appreciate.
Best Regards,
Mahima Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: the problem is described, a solution is proposed, and a request for a visit is made. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the request for the manager to visit is phrased slightly awkwardly as 'introduce this issue,' which makes the purpose of the visit less clear than it could be. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the problem and the requested action is more explicitly and naturally explained.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the problem description, and the request for action. However, the use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the transition 'Furthermore, Could you please...' and the phrase 'as well as positive result' at the end of the third paragraph, which lacks a clear grammatical link to the preceding clause. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'main obstacle' to describe a plumbing leak, or 'introduce this issue' when requesting a site visit. While these do not impede communication, they demonstrate a limited range of collocations. Using more precise terminology, such as 'urgent maintenance' or 'inspect the damage,' would elevate the lexical quality of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'leakage in waterpipe' (missing article), 'Plumber should visit here by' (unnecessary preposition), and 'would be greatly appreciate' (incorrect verb form). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the core message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as ensuring passive voice constructions are formed accurately.
