Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Manager,
I am writing to express the problem regarding my apartment. I will be explained about this issues in upcoming paragraphs.
Apparently, I am having two difficulties from last two months. Firstly, there are some major holes in windows which looks horrible. However, it looks scary at night. Secondly, there is tap leakage in my kitchen. Therefor, I am facing water problem sometimes.
In my opinion, I think whole window could be replaced with new one. There is no chance for repairing that so many holes. Also, you can call the plumber as soon as possible to see the problem. Further, we can discuss that what we can do to resolve the leakage issue.
I am waiting for you to visit my apartment and see the problem which I mentioned. In my point of view, we can understand the causes until and unless we saw.
I hope you understand my problem. I am looking forward for your response.
Yours sincerely,
Jenna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The description of the problems (holes in windows and a leaking tap) is clear, but the tone is slightly informal and repetitive. The suggestion for the window replacement is relevant, but the request for the manager to visit is phrased in a way that is slightly unnatural ('I am waiting for you to visit'). While the task requirements are met, the response lacks the professional tone typically expected in formal correspondence with a building manager.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'Therefor' is misspelled and used incorrectly to connect sentences, and 'until and unless we saw' is grammatically awkward and confusing. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. While there is an overall coherent arrangement, the flow is hindered by these issues with linking words and referencing, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. The student relies on basic descriptors like 'horrible', 'scary', and 'problem'. There are some noticeable errors in word choice, such as 'I will be explained about this issues' (passive voice error) and 'tap leakage' (which should be 'a leaking tap'). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary limits the score. The errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the core issues, but they are frequent enough to be noticeable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'I am having two difficulties from last two months' (incorrect preposition and tense), 'there are some major holes in windows which looks horrible' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'until and unless we saw' (incorrect tense). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence construction is often clunky. The errors are frequent, though they rarely impede the overall meaning of the letter. To improve, the student should focus on verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of prepositions.
