Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Building Manager,

I am writing to apprise you of a predicament in my apartment that necessities prompt repairs. The conundrum pertains to the water tank in the bathroom that has been leaking and emitting loud noises.

This predicament has been plaguing me for the past week, and it is engendering a great deal of inconvenience and discomfort. The water is either scalding or frigid and sometimes there is no water at all. The leaking water is also impairing the floor and the wall and creating a risk of mold and electrical hazards.

I reckon this issue should be rectified as soon as possible by a proficient plumber. I have endeavored to contact you several times by phone and email, but i have not received any acknowledgement from you. I am very apprehensive about the safety and quality of living in my apartment.

Therefore, I urge you to visit my apartment as soon as possible to witness the predicament for yourself and arrange for the requisite repairs. My apartment number is 450, and i am available from 9 am to 5 pm on weekends. Please inform me when you can come and inspect the predicament.

I appreciate your attention and co-operation in this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Naaz Randhawa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the problem with the water tank, suggested a professional repair, and requested a visit from the manager. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have maintained a consistent and professional tone throughout, which is essential for this type of correspondence. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. You have used a good range of cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the description of the problem to the impact, the previous attempts to contact the manager, and finally the request for a visit. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of your argument, making the letter easy to follow and professional in appearance.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a strong vocabulary, using sophisticated terms like 'apprise', 'predicament', 'engendering', and 'rectified'. While your vocabulary is impressive, there is a slight tendency to overuse certain words like 'predicament' (used three times), which makes the writing feel slightly repetitive. A wider variety of synonyms would enhance the natural flow. Nevertheless, the lexical range is more than sufficient for the task, and your word choices are generally precise and appropriate for a formal context, showing a good command of English.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, such as 'I have endeavored to contact you several times by phone and email, but i have not received any acknowledgement from you.' There are a few minor errors, such as the failure to capitalize the pronoun 'i' in two instances and a slight misuse of 'necessities' (should be 'necessitates'). However, these are rare, non-systematic slips that do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is generally very strong.
