Student answer (Band 6.0)

DEAR SIR OR MADAM,

I am writing a letter to inform you that water will not come in my Home.

The problem is there is no water supply in the bathroom or kitchen, which is causing most difficulty for me and my family in daily routing, we are unable to cooking , cleaning , take a bath or even a using washroom properly, we have to check our tap connections but everything seems fine there is no problem in there.

I think this issue should be looks into as soon as possible so that water supply can be restored. i think it may be due to water blockage in the water line , or a pump failure or problem in water tank.

I would request to visit my apartment to see what the actual problem is in my water line . why my water will not come in my home. it would be a great help from you to solve my problem.

thank you for your attention to this issue I look forward to your support

yours sincerely,

Hiral Joshi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the description of the water issue. While the purpose is clear, the response would benefit from more concise phrasing to avoid restating the same information multiple times. Overall, the task requirements are fulfilled, and the reader is left with a clear understanding of the situation and the expected action.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the problem description and the request for a visit could be smoother. Some sentences are run-on, such as 'The problem is there is no water supply... we are unable to cooking...', which disrupts the flow of information. Improving the use of linking words like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'therefore' would help to create a more professional and coherent structure throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate the issue effectively. There are some noticeable errors in word choice and form, such as 'unable to cooking' instead of 'unable to cook' and 'daily routing' instead of 'daily routine'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms. The range of vocabulary is somewhat basic; incorporating more specific terminology related to plumbing or maintenance would enhance the quality of the response and demonstrate a higher level of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('this issue should be looks into'), incorrect verb forms ('unable to cooking'), and punctuation errors, such as missing capital letters at the start of sentences and inconsistent comma usage. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the overall accuracy of the text.
