Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear manager,

I am writing to express my problems with the apartment. I have noticed that the celling of my house is constantly licking after the upper floor owner use their bathroom. Apart from this, i have noticed the cracks on my walls too. I think this issue should be fixed by the repairing the celling as due to this problem sometimes my bathroom floor gets to slippery and it is hard to use. In my opinion, it should be fixed by maintenance as early as possible.

Moreover, sometimes during the nights i cannot use the bathroom due to this water licking issue. I have already informed the upper floor owner about this issue but he told me we need approval from manager side.

I think you should visit my apartment to see the problem so you can understand and know it properly and you can help me to. I hope you can help me with this issue. Thank you for your time.

Your faithfully,

deval

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the problem (leaking ceiling and cracks), suggesting a solution (maintenance repair), and requesting a visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the bathroom issue. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the extent of the damage or suggest a specific timeframe for the visit, which would make the request more professional and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use some cohesive devices like 'Apart from this' and 'Moreover' to link your points. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing and some awkward transitions. For instance, the connection between the ceiling leak and the bathroom floor could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would improve the overall structure and readability of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'maintenance' and 'approval'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'celling' instead of 'ceiling' and 'licking' instead of 'leaking'. These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone of the letter. Additionally, the word choice is sometimes basic. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise terms related to property maintenance would help you achieve a higher score. Focus on accuracy in spelling and using collocations correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the upper floor owner use their bathroom' (subject-verb agreement), 'the cracks on my walls' (unnecessary article), and 'it is hard to use' (vague reference). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of 'i' instead of 'I'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and capitalization.
