Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing regarding a issue that my family and I are facing in my apartment.
Since we moved in this apartment everything is going well, there is a water leakage from one of the pipes of washroom. Due to which there are many unusual insects running around our apartment. I am mainly concerned about my children as my younger daughter is allergic to insects and she caught high fever last night.
Considering such issues, is it possible for you to arrange a pest control service for our apartment. Additionally, a brief inspection from a professional plumber will also be appreciated to curb the leakage issue because it may lead to serious issues such as mold and bacteria.
I would definitely appreciate if you could visit our apartment to see the issues and provide any recommendations. Although the issues seems minimal, its consequences are far-reaching and substantial.
I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Navjot Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the water leakage and the resulting insect problem, propose specific solutions (pest control and a plumber), and formally request a visit from the manager. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the situation described. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the closing is professional. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the problem to the proposed solutions and finally the request for a visit. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Considering such issues', and 'Although' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal complaint letter. Phrases like 'curb the leakage issue', 'far-reaching and substantial', and 'provide any recommendations' are used effectively. There is a minor error in the first sentence ('a issue' should be 'an issue'), but this does not impede communication. You use a variety of words to describe the situation, showing an ability to convey specific meaning. The vocabulary is sufficient to express your points clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'Since we moved in this apartment' (should be 'into') and 'the issues seems' (should be 'seem'), these errors are minor and do not cause confusion. The use of complex sentences, such as 'Although the issues seems minimal, its consequences are far-reaching and substantial', shows a good command of grammar. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall control of language is strong enough to convey your message clearly.
