Student answer (Band 6.0)

Maintenance request- Dishwasher leakage

Dear Building Manager,

I am writing this letter to report a maintenance issue with the dishwasher in my apartment.

Over past few days, I have noticed that there is leakage whenever I use the dishwasher. Unfortunately, the leakage is making the floor wet and I am concerned that it might cause further issues to the floorings.

It would be really appreciated if you could arrange someone to look over the issue and do a repair or replacement for the faulty part. As a person who frequently uses the dishwasher it would be a great help if you could address the issue at the earliest opportunity. Just let me know beforehand of your visit.

Thank you for your attention to this issue. I look forward to hearing from you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum requirement, which significantly impacts the score. Because the letter is too short, the development of your ideas is limited. To improve, you should expand on the details, such as explaining how long the problem has persisted or providing specific times you are available for a visit. This would help you meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Over past few days' and 'As a person who', which help the flow of information. However, the paragraphing is somewhat underdeveloped due to the short length of the text. To reach a higher band, ensure that you use a wider range of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, distinct focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'maintenance issue', 'leakage', and 'earliest opportunity'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor errors, such as 'Over past few days' (missing 'the') and 'cause further issues to the floorings' (the word 'floorings' is less natural than 'flooring' or 'floor'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a slightly more varied range of vocabulary to express your concerns more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'It would be really appreciated if you could arrange someone...'. While the meaning is clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('Over [the] past few days') and minor phrasing issues. The punctuation is generally correct, but the overall range of structures is somewhat restricted. To achieve a higher score, aim to include a greater variety of complex sentence forms and ensure that your articles and prepositions are used consistently and accurately.
