Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you regarding water leakage in our washroom since last 2 months. I would request you to visit our apartment and fix the issue at your earliest.
As we stay on the top floor, the leakage problem is due to the thin slab of terrace which needs to get repaired. Me and my family whenever we use washroom water leakage starts at the centre area. This issue was normal before 2 months consequently most of the ceiling is getting wet. Especially when it rains, leakage is more as compared to normal days.
Although we tried fixing the problem it stopped for a while eventually again the leakage started through walls. I think it would better if the building manager can visit our apartment to inspect the whole floor and take precaution before it get major issue.
I would request to the manager to visit the apartment as soon as possible, due to the inconvienence caused to

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: the problem is described, a solution is suggested, and a request for a visit is made. However, the response ends abruptly mid-sentence ('due to the inconvienence caused to'), which is a significant omission that leaves the task incomplete. While the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, the lack of a proper closing and the unfinished final sentence prevent the response from being fully developed. To improve, ensure that all ideas are brought to a logical conclusion and that the letter follows standard formal conventions, including a complete sign-off.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'consequently most of the ceiling' and 'eventually again the leakage started'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the abrupt ending significantly disrupts the flow of the text. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that transitions between sentences are smooth and logical, rather than relying on repetitive structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand the nature of the problem. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'thin slab of terrace' (likely referring to the roof or ceiling) and 'take precaution before it get major issue'. Spelling errors like 'inconvienence' also detract from the overall quality. To improve, try to use more precise terminology related to building maintenance and ensure that collocations are natural. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also help convey the urgency of the situation more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'since last 2 months' (should be 'for the last two months'), 'Me and my family' (should be 'My family and I'), and 'before it get major issue' (should be 'before it becomes a major issue'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly regarding the use of commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to lower the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
