Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Hashemi,
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I am writing to report a problem regarding the heating system that makes it difficult to use the shower.
The challenge is the sudden reduction in the pressure of the heating system, leading to the water temperature dropping dramatically. It also compelled me to utilize cold water in the shower.
I consider that this issue stems from a lack of water. To address this inconvenience, I would suggest that you call a plumber to review your plumbing system before it develops into a serious problem.
I would appreciate it if you could rapidly solve this issue in the shortest possible time, since it truly provides harsh conditions for me. It also would be much better for you to avoid any further costs.
Thank you very much for your consideration and time. I look forward to hearing from you. Please feel free to contact me if you need my contribution in this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Mohammadreza Hadavi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described, a solution is proposed, and a request for a visit is made. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are clearly presented and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent. The response is well-structured and covers the requirements of the prompt effectively. There are no omissions, and the content is relevant throughout, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'The challenge is', 'To address this', and 'It also' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and precise for the context of a formal complaint. Phrases like 'sudden reduction in the pressure' and 'dramatically' demonstrate a good range of vocabulary. While some phrasing is slightly repetitive or could be more natural (e.g., 'my contribution in this matter' is a bit awkward), the meaning is always clear. The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey their message effectively without any significant errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter displays a good range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences. Most sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is strong. There are minor instances where phrasing could be more natural, such as 'it truly provides harsh conditions for me', but these do not interfere with the clarity of the message. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the overall grammatical accuracy is high, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.
