Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing to request repair in the ceiling of the my apartment. I have observed that there is a leakage of water which cause problems, especially during rain.

I think the best solution to address this problem is use the white cement on the entire ceiling followed by waterproof paint which is quite effective as I was informed by one of my friend who used the same method to deal with same problem. Moreover, I would appreciate it if you could provide a room during construction where I can live temporary.

It would be a great idea if you could visit the apartment in person to see the leakage. This will help you to estimate the budget for repairing. You can visit the apartment any time during day since I have a few days off from work this week.

Please let me know what you think about the solution I have provided and when will you available to come in the apartment.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

PJ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described, a solution is proposed, and a request for a site visit is made. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the leak (e.g., mentioning potential damage to furniture or health concerns) to further develop the ideas. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'This will help', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the problem description and the proposed solution could be smoother. To improve, ensure that the connection between sentences is more varied, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'observed', 'leakage', 'estimate', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request repair in the ceiling' (should be 'request a repair for the ceiling') and 'live temporary' (should be 'live temporarily'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated phrasing would enhance the quality of your writing. The current range is functional but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the my apartment' (incorrect article usage), 'which cause problems' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'when will you available' (missing verb 'be'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic articles, verb forms, and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will also help you achieve a higher band.
