Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this letter to inform about the hard situation I am facing in my apartment because it's not fixed yet.
To begin with, there is a issue with the tap in my sink. It is liking all day and night, which is costs me the water bills and it's also leads to waste of the water a non-renewable source.
Another thing, we are facing at our home is there is some problem with the water heater, we are not getting enough hot water. As it is cold right now, it is very difficult for us to get ready in the morning with a cool water shower.
As a member of this building, I am requesting you to fix our these two matters as soon as possible. To add on, I would like you to visit our flat personally so you get to know the situation more better and in addition to that you can contact the contractor who can fix it.
I will wait for your response.
Thank you,
Yours faithfully,
Raj.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described (leaking tap and faulty water heater), a solution is proposed (fixing the issues and contacting a contractor), and a request for a visit is made. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. While the problems are clear, the letter could be improved by providing more specific details, such as how long these issues have persisted or the specific times you are available for a visit, to fully satisfy the requirements of a formal request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. There is a basic use of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Another thing', and 'In addition to that'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the tap issue and the water heater issue is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but it lacks the sophisticated linking required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'hard situation' instead of 'difficult situation', 'liking' instead of 'leaking', and 'costs me the water bills' instead of 'increases my water bills'. Additionally, phrases like 'get to know the situation more better' are grammatically incorrect and stylistically weak. While the meaning is always clear, the limited range of vocabulary and the recurring errors prevent a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'there is a issue' (should be 'an issue'), 'it's also leads to' (should be 'it also leads to'), and 'fix our these two matters' (should be 'fix these two matters'). The misuse of articles and verb forms is consistent. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
