Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about the building that need to be repair as soon as possible.

The problem we are facing is all about the water leakage from 8th floor for your apartment due to which we cannot get proper water to cook or to fresh up. We have to wait for long day that if we could get chance to get water so that we can continue with your day to day life.

I suggest that we can close the water pipeline for one day in your whole apartment. So, that we can call the pumbler which can take there time to fix the issue within a day without any disturbance. Therefore, we can get solution for this problem.

I would suggest you to come an visit your building once so that you have an idea what we are facing now a days and because of this it impact your day to day life problem

i hope my request does not cause you any inconvenice.

your faithfully,

Dk

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The description of the water leakage is slightly confusing, as it is unclear if the leak is coming from the floor above or if it is a general building issue. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the expression of ideas is occasionally repetitive, such as the mention of 'day to day life' appearing twice. To improve, ensure that the explanation of the problem is precise and that the proposed solution is clearly articulated without unnecessary repetition.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the transition 'Therefore, we can get solution for this problem' feels forced and does not flow naturally from the previous sentence. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the use of 'your apartment' when referring to the building's water supply. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended nouns would significantly enhance the flow and coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'fresh up' instead of 'freshen up' or 'take there time' instead of 'take their time'. The term 'pumbler' is a misspelling of 'plumber', which impacts the professional tone. While the student manages to convey the message, the range of vocabulary is limited to basic, everyday terms. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise terminology related to maintenance and repairs and ensure correct spelling of common professional terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('building that need to be repair'), incorrect preposition usage ('come an visit'), and awkward sentence construction ('wait for long day that if we could get chance'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper structure or containing unnecessary full stops. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of basic sentence construction and verb tenses.
