Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you about an issue I have been experiencing lately with the taps in my bathroom which I require urgent attention.

All the taps in my bathroom have not been supplying water for the past one week now. I have been fetching water from the tap in the kitchen in order to bath. The most annoying part is the WC. Because after defecating I had to go fetch water to flush.

I would like if you can send a plumber to fix this issue urgently because my uncle and his family are coming to pay me a visit next week Sunday, and I would not want a situation whereby they go through some stress before they can use the bathroom.

I would appreciate if you can send your manager to come and assess my bathroom, maybe this will hasten the repair. I would be home through next week so he can visit anytime.

Thanks. I look forward to your prompt action.

Your Tenant,

Kim.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described, a solution is proposed, and a request for a visit is made. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager, although the inclusion of overly graphic details regarding the WC is slightly inappropriate for a professional context. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request. Cohesive devices such as 'in order to', 'because', and 'therefore' (implied) are used to link ideas. However, the transition between the description of the problem and the request for a visit could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the issue clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'I would like if you can' instead of 'I would appreciate it if you could' and 'hasten the repair'. While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the more sophisticated collocations or precise terminology that would elevate the score to a higher band. The word choice is functional but basic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which I require urgent attention' (should be 'which require'), 'for the past one week now' (redundant 'now'), and 'I would be home through next week' (should be 'throughout'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. The use of punctuation is generally correct, though the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater control.
