Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Madam,

I am writing this letter to you to report a problem that I am experiencing in my apartment from the very first day since I moved in.

So, when I tried to do dishes with the kitchen faucet, I found that the flow to tap is too slow to do the dishes, and if I try to do so with the shower or sprinkler, the water pressure is so high that it splatters all around the kitchen island and reachs our couch as well. Thus both the ways are unsuitable for finishing the dishes as one takes too long and the other creates a lot of mess.

I think the faucet needs to be checked by a mechanic or a plumber so that they can find the exact cause of the problem and can take appropriate action. I believe the tap head should be repaired or replaced with a new one, in order to tackle the issue.

I would really appericiate if you could visit my suite to have a look at the faucet and initiate much needed repair because I made a request about this on the online portal of the building maintnence but no action has been taken till now..

I hope you will pay attention to this matter and consider for an urgent solution for this. I will be very thankful to you.

Regards,

HK

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the water pressure issue, suggest a professional repair, and request a site visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have effectively communicated the frustration caused by the faulty faucet and the lack of response from the online portal, which adds relevant detail to your request. The response is fully functional and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to the proposed solution and the final request for action. Cohesive devices such as 'Thus', 'in order to', and 'because' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. There is a clear sense of structure, and the referencing is consistent throughout the text, making it easy for the reader to follow your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal complaint. Phrases like 'unsuitable for finishing the dishes' and 'initiate much needed repair' are well-chosen. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'appericiate' (appreciate) and 'maintnence' (maintenance), and a slight misuse of 'sprinkler' when referring to a kitchen faucet attachment. However, these do not impede communication. You have successfully used a variety of words to describe the problem and your expectations, showing a sufficient range for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'reachs' (reaches) and 'consider for an urgent solution' (consider an urgent solution), the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, and the meaning is never obscured by these minor slips. The use of complex sentences, such as 'I think the faucet needs to be checked by a mechanic or a plumber so that they can find the exact cause', demonstrates a good command of grammar.
