Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding a serious water leakage issue in our apartment building.
Firstly, this has been a recurring issue in the building. Due to which, there have been a lot of damage to our furniture. Secondly, there have been multiple visits by few plumbers but the issue is still unresolved. Lastly, water leakage has also damaged our ceilings and we can not even figure out where the water is coming from.
I would request you to consider this matter of utmost importance, because not only us, but also few more neighbors have made the same complaint. Also, this problem needs an attention of highly qualified plumber who knows where the fault is. Otherwise, such leakage might cause structural damage to the apartment building in future. In addition, our apartment buildings require a regular structural routine checks to ensure they are fine.
Hence, it is my humble request to visit our apartment along with certified professional to rectify the root cause of the problem. I hope this matter will be taken into consideration as soon as possible.
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Thanks.
Regards,
Pankaj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the water leakage problem, suggest that a highly qualified professional is needed to identify the root cause, and explicitly ask the manager to visit the apartment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to explain the severity of the situation, such as the damage to furniture and ceilings. You have maintained a consistent and professional tone throughout the response, which is essential for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'In addition' to guide the reader through your points. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of 'Due to which' at the start of a sentence is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the description of the problem from the request for action. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recurring issue', 'utmost importance', and 'rectify the root cause'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'needs an attention of' (should be 'needs the attention of') and 'structural routine checks' (should be 'routine structural checks'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. The word choices are functional but somewhat standard.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there have been a lot of damage' (should be 'has been'), 'few plumbers' (should be 'a few plumbers'), and 'our apartment buildings require a regular structural routine checks' (should be 'require regular structural routine checks'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
