Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to show concern about the condition of my apartment that needs an immediate repair.
The most prominent issue is a water leakage from the roof , that is obviously an inevitable as while sleeping i am procuring disturbed sleep which affects not only my personal life but also the professional life as well. Everyday the few drops fall on my bed that is undoubtedly makes me feel uncomfortable due to this i am unable to sleep well. Also, i always late for my office work, which impacts my performance at an office.
To tackle with this issue, i need a maintenance team , who can look out at the condition and will figure out what steps are needed for solving this problem. I am eagerly requesting you arrange a skilled maintenance team for me as soon as possible.
I also want you to visit my apartment personally , so you can examine the actual issue and suggest a pragmatic solution.
i hope you will understand my situation .
Yours faithfully,
Jagroop kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the task: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive; for instance, the impact of the leak on your sleep and work performance is mentioned twice in a way that feels circular rather than additive. To improve, ensure each point is distinct and directly addresses the prompt's requirements without unnecessary elaboration on personal feelings that do not directly help the manager resolve the maintenance issue.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your request. You use some cohesive devices like 'The most prominent issue' and 'To tackle with this issue' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the sentence 'due to this i am unable to sleep well' is a bit repetitive given the previous sentence. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the last would improve the overall flow and coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'prominent', 'maintenance', and 'pragmatic'. However, there are several instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'procuring disturbed sleep' is not a standard collocation; 'experiencing' would be more natural. Additionally, 'inevitable' is used incorrectly in the context of a water leak. While your meaning is clear, the vocabulary lacks the precision and naturalness required for a higher band score. Focusing on learning common collocations related to housing and repairs would be very beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'that is obviously an inevitable' (article and adjective usage) and 'i always late' (missing verb). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and the capitalization of 'i'. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement.
