Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Alex,
I am writing to inform you about the issue with the heating system in our apartment and to request your assistance in resolving this matter.
From the past 2 weeks, the heating system is not functioning properly. Although it occasionally turns on, it stops working for a short duration, leaving the room extremely cold, especially in the evenings. This has made me difficult to feel comfortable at home and affected my ability to work effectively.
I would be grateful if you could visit our apartment or arrange a qualified technician to investigate the heating system as soon as possible. I understand the repairs may take some time, but I would appreciate if this issue could be addressed urgently due to the current weather condition.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and I hope immediate action would be taken. I look forward to your response.
kind regards,
Ashu Berwal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the heating problem, suggest a solution (a visit or a technician), and formally request a site visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The purpose is clear from the outset, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. You have maintained a consistent formal register throughout the letter, which is essential for this task type. No parts of the task were omitted, and the response is well-focused on the requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs detail the problem and the requested action, and the closing provides a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'especially', and 'as soon as possible' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow. The transition between describing the problem and requesting a solution is natural and logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'functioning properly', 'qualified technician', and 'investigate the heating system' are accurate and appropriate for the context. There is a minor collocation error in 'made me difficult to feel comfortable', which would be better phrased as 'made it difficult for me to feel comfortable'. However, this does not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally natural and fits the formal tone of the letter well, showing a good awareness of style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'From the past 2 weeks' (should be 'For the past 2 weeks') and 'I hope immediate action would be taken' (should be 'will be taken'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. You demonstrate control over complex structures, such as the use of 'Although' clauses and conditional-like requests. The punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the overall clarity of your writing.
