Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Davis,
I am writing to tell you about a water leak in my apartment flat 4b.,
For the last three days, the water has been dripping from the ceiling in the main bathroom. It happens every time the upstairs neighbor uses their shower. A small pool of the water is made on the floor as well as the paint of the ceiling is peeling off now.
Because of this issue is causing a big problem. All of the day I usually mop the floor to avoid slipping. Due to this my rooms smell damp and wet. Which invites the mosquitoes and flies in my house.
According to me, the plumber should check the pipes as well as the ceiling and fix this problem as soon as possible.
Please visit the house to see the damage of your walls. I usually back from work at home at 5:00 pm. Please come at any time on Saturday.
Thankyou.
Your Sincerely,
Khushpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the task: describing the leak, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'solution' could be slightly more professional. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left in no doubt about the nature of the problem or the desired outcome. All parts of the prompt are addressed sufficiently.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem description to the impact and finally to the requested action. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. Phrases like 'Because of this' and 'Due to this' are used repeatedly, which makes the flow feel a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the issue effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'apartment flat' (redundant) and 'I usually back from work' (incorrect verb usage). While the range is sufficient to convey the message, there is limited use of less common or more precise vocabulary. To improve, the student should focus on more natural collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing the impact of the leak.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Because of this issue is causing' (incorrect sentence structure) and 'the paint of the ceiling is peeling off' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with sentence fragments and comma usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
