Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
am writing this letter regarding the faulty heating system. Although I have mentioned this pressing issue multiple times, no action has been taken till now. It is an unavoidable issue especially in winters.
In my opinion, multiple remedies can be performed in order to overcome this situation. First of all, a service technician should be arranges to inspect and provide a long lasting solution. Secondly, all the building occupants verify their heating system.
On the top of it, the pipe needs a complete replacement to stop the leaking. The wooden base of the cabinet is also soaked and starting to grow mold, so that damaged wood needs to be treated or replaced as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
Please visit my apartment this week to see the problem in person and arrange for maintenance to fix it. You can reach me by phone or email to let me know what day works best for you.
Best regards,
Rajpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the problem, suggesting solutions, and requesting a visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The ideas are relevant, though the suggestion that 'all the building occupants verify their heating system' is slightly unclear in context. The letter is well-structured, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To improve, ensure that your proposed solutions are directly related to the specific problem you described, as the mention of other occupants' systems feels a bit disconnected from your personal issue.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the statement of the problem to proposed solutions and finally the call to action. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'First of all' and 'Secondly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'On the top of it'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'faulty heating system', 'pressing issue', and 'service technician'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'arranges' instead of 'arranged' and 'in winters' instead of 'in winter'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. Focus on using more natural phrasing for common situations, such as 'urgent matter' instead of 'pressing issue' in this specific context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that slightly distract the reader, such as 'I am writing' (missing 'I'), 'a service technician should be arranges' (incorrect verb form), and 'all the building occupants verify' (missing a modal verb like 'should'). Punctuation is generally correct, but these recurring errors in verb tense and agreement prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
