Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Building Manager,

I am writing to inform you regarding a problem in my apartment which require an urgent view. The issue has been causing me inconvenience from a long time and hope that you resolve it as soon as possible.

From the past few days, the water heater in my bathroom is not working appropriately even when I switch on the heater the water still remains cold after few minutes. I have already check the circuit connection and external factors. Due to this issue, I am not able to take warm showers in the morning which is very inconvenient.

I believe the heater may have developed an internal problem which needs to be assisted by professional technician's guidance. If repairing does not work, I would suggest to replacing it with new one. It would be great, if you could send someone to assists this problem as soon as possible.

Please let me know when will you be able to inspect and I am looking forward to get the positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Nirali Dhotre

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the problem with the water heater, suggesting a solution (repair or replacement), and requesting a site visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the task requirements. There are no omissions, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the requested topic throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific details and finally the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'Due to this issue' and 'If repairing does not work' are used effectively to link sentences. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band, but the overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'internal problem' and 'professional technician's guidance'. However, there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'inform you regarding' (should be 'inform you of') and 'assists this problem' (should be 'assist with this problem'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'which require' (should be 'requires'), 'from a long time' (should be 'for a long time'), 'I have already check' (should be 'checked'), and 'when will you be able' (should be 'when you will be able'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency would improve the accuracy.
