Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Building Manager,

I'm writing this letter to complain regarding water leaking problem. For a long time, the water is dripping from the ceiling in the living room. The problem is getting worse during rainy season which cause damaged to all my living room furniture. Furthermore, the floor area is often wet and hazy during monsoon season.

I searched over the internet about this problem, and I found that Dr. Fixit can fix this issue. Many of friends also recommend me for this item. Dr Fixit is stronger and reliable product and it is easy to use it. The company has claimed that tis product can maintain the stronger bond between the joints and completely eliminate the leaking issue.

Therefore, I would like to request you to visit my house and investigate the actual root cause. It would be great if you could discuss this problem with the upper tenant and visit their house as well to clearly understand the problem.

I hope you will address my concern at your earliest convenience and I look forward to your prompt action.

Thank for your attention and consideration.

Best Regards,

Ram Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You described the water leakage problem, suggested a specific solution (Dr. Fixit), and requested a site visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. To improve, ensure that your suggestions are more realistic; while recommending a specific product is helpful, the focus should remain on the manager's responsibility to provide professional repairs rather than you dictating the specific brand of sealant to be used. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the transition between the problem description and the product recommendation is slightly abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to integrate your ideas more smoothly by using a wider variety of linking phrases and ensuring that the progression of thought feels more natural rather than mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'investigate', 'root cause', and 'earliest convenience'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'hazy' (which usually refers to weather or vision, not a wet floor) and 'maintain the stronger bond' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Additionally, there are minor errors like 'tis' instead of 'this'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for small spelling slips to demonstrate better control over your word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'water leaking problem' should be 'water leakage problem', 'cause damaged' should be 'caused damage', and 'Many of friends' should be 'Many of my friends'. Furthermore, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage to improve your accuracy.
