Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I writing this letter regarding a problem I am facing in my apartment for few weeks.
When I first came back from my vacation. I started noticing water dripping from my bathroom ceiling. I have also contacted the concierge so many times but the problem is still there. I might the above unit which is causing this leak. I think whenever they shower, water starts dripping from the ceiling.
I think the best solution for this problem is to have the above unit’s bathroom checked. If their shower drain is leaking. It’s best you can call the plumber and have it checked out. Otherwise if this continues it might spread out and more damage could be done. So its the best to have this fixed as soon as possible.
Lastly, I am here until next Monday 14 September. If you could please come and have a look at the leak. Then you can contact the plumber and explain the whole situation better. Also if the plumber comes after 14th, you can access my unit anytime to have this leak fixed.
Thank for you time. Looking forward to see to next week.
Kind regards
Shubhkaran Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For example, you mention contacting the concierge multiple times, but you could have elaborated on the urgency of the situation to make your request more persuasive. The letter clearly communicates your needs, but adding a bit more detail regarding the impact of the leak would have strengthened the response. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'When I first came back' and 'Otherwise', to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt. For instance, the jump between describing the leak and suggesting the solution could be smoother. Additionally, there are some minor issues with sentence structure, such as 'I might the above unit', which makes the reference unclear. Improving the flow between sentences would help to achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'concierge', 'vacation', and 'plumber' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'I writing this' (missing auxiliary verb) and 'Thank for you time' (incorrect preposition). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a lack of precision. To improve, try to use more varied collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I writing this' instead of 'I am writing', 'for few weeks' instead of 'for a few weeks', and 'I might the above unit' which is grammatically incomplete. Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as starting sentences with 'If' and 'When' and using periods where commas would be more appropriate. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing.
