Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to complain you about the air conditioning unit in your apartment, which is not properly working, and turn off automatically after few minutes.

To begin with, when I turned on the air conditioner, it would seems to be in non-working condition. It does not provide cool air through their fans, and immediately turned off without providing enough cooling. As a result, this issue disrupts my sleep, which would affect my overall productivity at my work.

I believe it needs repair because I already tried to fix this problem. It now requires professional help from any experienced electrician, who would solve this critical obstacle. Otherwise, you should replace this air conditioner as it shows quite old, and hold only 3-star power rating. I believe new one with high quality and advanced features would definitely resolve my current issue, which may assists me to avoid any inconvenience.

I would extremely appreciate if you could come at my place to examine the real situation, how it effects my daily routine, and mental well-being. I would suggest you can visit my home

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the letter ends abruptly mid-sentence, which is a significant issue. To improve, ensure you complete your thoughts and provide a clear closing statement. The ideas are relevant, but the development is slightly hindered by the incomplete ending, which prevents the letter from feeling like a finished piece of correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'As a result', and 'Otherwise' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors and the incomplete final sentence. The referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the problem description and the request for a visit could be smoother. To reach a higher band, ensure that your sentences are fully formed and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your arguments more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively, such as 'productivity', 'professional help', and 'inconvenience'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'complain you' instead of 'complain to you' and 'shows quite old' instead of 'seems quite old'. You also use 'critical obstacle', which is slightly unnatural in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and phrasal verbs to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'it would seems' (should be 'it seems'), 'turn off' (should be 'turns off'), and 'may assists' (should be 'may assist'). Additionally, the final sentence is incomplete, which is a major grammatical failure. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors suggests that you need to focus on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency to improve your accuracy.
