Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Jim,

I am living in your building, there are many problems which I faced from last two months. One of the major problem is hot water system is not working properly, it need to be fixed. As you know due to cold weather, we need to use the hot water to taking shower and to prepare our food. I think it should be solve as soon as possible to for our health and prevent from cold weather.

I want to ask from you from can you visit our apartment to see the problem. My whole family is facing same problem. Apart from it, there is no brighter lights near the entrance of the building. It also become us more scary mostly in night time to use the stairs. If there should be install some motion-sensing lighting would be really helpful for everyone. Because motion-sensing lights turn on and off automatically when someone enter.

Yours sincerely,

Nasreen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the problem, suggesting a solution, and requesting a visit. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion for motion-sensing lights is a good addition, but the explanation of the hot water issue could be more precise. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the problems and the requested actions is more explicitly stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with the first focusing on the hot water issue and the second on the lighting problem. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Apart from it' and 'Because', although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'I want to ask from you from can you visit' is awkward and disrupts the logical flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used naturally would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate the problems effectively. There are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'brighter lights' instead of 'better lighting' or 'more illumination', and 'become us more scary' which is non-standard. While the range is sufficient to cover the requirements, there is a lack of less common or more sophisticated lexical items. The errors in collocation, such as 'prepare our food' (instead of 'cook') and 'solve as soon as possible to for our health', do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'there are many problems which I faced from last two months' (should be 'have been facing for the last two months') and 'it need to be fixed' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with sentence boundaries and preposition usage, such as 'ask from you from can you visit'. While the meaning is usually clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve the accuracy.
