Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear, Manager

I am writing this letter in regard about some repairs that needs to be done in my apartment.

I have been renting the apartment for six months now, my overall experience is pretty great and I enjoy all the amenities that this complex offers.

However, when I recieved my last months's water bill, it was slightly higher than usual. At first I did not pay much attention to it but then my wife suggested me to check for any leaking taps. While inspecting for any leaks, i noticed a small amount of water accumulating under the sink in the washroom, when I moved the sink, the wall area behind the sink was all we. I think a pipe is leaking behind the wall.

So I would appreciate if you could attend to this matter at you earliset conveniance so the problem can be tackled before it gets out of hand. You can visit the apartment anytime as I will be home this entire week.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. The letter clearly describes the problem by explaining the water bill anomaly and the hidden leaking pipe behind the sink in the washroom. Furthermore, the writer clearly suggests what should be done by requesting immediate attention to prevent further damage, and asks the building manager to visit the apartment to inspect the issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The purpose is immediately clear and sustained throughout. All parts of the prompt are well addressed without any omissions. Therefore, this performance easily meets the criteria for Band 7.0 as it fully covers all requirements with a clear and consistent purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression. It begins with an opening statement, moves into background context and the discovery of the leak, and concludes with a call to action and sign-off. Paragraphing is used logically to separate different ideas, such as the background of renting the apartment versus the specific details of the leak. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, with transitional markers like 'However' and 'While inspecting'. However, there are some run-on sentences and comma splices, such as in the third paragraph ('While inspecting for any leaks, i noticed... when I moved the sink...'), which make the flow slightly mechanical at times. Overall, the organisation is logical and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 or 7.0 evaluation.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'amenities', 'inspecting', 'accumulating', and 'earliest convenience'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies, such as writing 'in regard about' instead of 'with regard to' or 'regarding', and a typo with 'recieved'. The phrase 'all we' is clearly a typo for 'all wet'. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the precise nature of the plumbing issue and the desired action. The lexical resource aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors, as the range is adequate and communication is never impeded by word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and temporal clauses ('While inspecting for any leaks, i noticed...', 'if you could attend... so the problem can be tackled...'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, including subject-verb agreement issues ('some repairs that needs to be done'), capitalization errors ('i noticed'), and a run-on sentence structure in the third paragraph. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. The grammatical control reflects a solid Band 6.0 performance, featuring a reasonable mix of structures alongside noticeable non-systematic errors.
