You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Miller,

I am writing to bring an urgent maintenance issue in my unit, Apartment 4B, to your attention.

Over the past few days, a significant water leak has developed beneath the kitchen sink. Water continuously seeps out whenever the faucet is turned on, causing liquid to pool across the floor and damage the wooden cabinetry underneath.

To properly address this, I believe a professional plumber needs to inspect the underlying pipe connections and replace the damaged seals or piping as soon as possible to prevent further structural damage or mold growth.

Could you please visit my apartment sometime tomorrow morning to inspect the damage yourself and evaluate what repairs will be necessary? I will be home all morning until 12:00 PM to let you in.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Alex Morgan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points effectively. You described the problem clearly ('a significant water leak has developed beneath the kitchen sink'), suggested a practical solution ('a professional plumber needs to inspect the underlying pipe connections'), and asked the building manager to visit ('Could you please visit my apartment sometime tomorrow morning'). The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a building manager. However, the length requirement of 150 words was not met, as the response contains 148 words. Because it falls slightly short of the minimum word count, a minor penalty has been applied to Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression. It opens with a precise statement of purpose, elaborates on the issue in the body paragraphs, and concludes with a clear call to action and appropriate sign-off. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'Over the past few days', 'To properly address this', and 'Could you please'. Paragraphing is logical, with each paragraph serving a distinct function (introduction, description, solution, visit request, and closing).

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a wide, natural, and flexible vocabulary range suitable for a formal correspondence. Phrases like 'urgent maintenance issue', 'significant water leak', 'underlying pipe connections', and 'structural damage or mold growth' show a high level of lexical control and precise word choice. There are no spelling or word-choice errors, and the vocabulary flows smoothly to convey exact meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a wide variety of complex sentence structures used with a high degree of accuracy. Excellent examples include conditional and participial constructions such as 'Water continuously seeps out whenever the faucet is turned on, causing liquid to pool across the floor'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, punctuation is handled correctly throughout, and grammar exhibits full flexibility.
