Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing this to bring to your kind attention that there is a leakage in the pipe of my apartment's restroom.
I am your tenant and I live in the apartment number 131 near sheridan plaza. Actually, when yesterday I came back from work and decided to freshen up and went to use the washroom then I noticed that water was dripping from the roof of my washroom. It has become a hazard for me as I can slip anytime while using it. I think it is same pipe which was leaking a year ago because the water is seeping out from the same spot.
It would be in the best interest for both of us, a plumber should be called asap becasue I have realized that the dripping of water is constantly increasing. I know a plumber personally, he used to repair in our college or even you want to call your own guy that would be also fine.
It would be great if you can come here and see it yourself to analyze the problem and take a estimate about the whole situtation.
I hope you understand this critical sitution.
Yours sincerely,
Vishav.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. You successfully describe the problem by mentioning the water leakage from the washroom roof and the associated hazard. You clearly state what should be done about it, suggesting a plumber be called and offering your personal recommendation. Finally, you ask the building manager to visit your apartment to inspect the issue and estimate the situation. The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a letter to a building manager. The purpose is clear throughout, and the ideas are developed sufficiently, making this a solid performance for Task Achievement, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure and a logical progression of ideas, moving smoothly from the greeting and introduction of the problem to the proposed solutions and the final request for a visit. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the description of the leak, the suggested solutions, and the closing remarks. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, although some transitions like 'Actually, when yesterday I came back' feel a bit spoken and clunky. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional mechanical referencing slightly detracts from natural flow. Overall, the organization meets the criteria for Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7 due to clear logical organization.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'leakage', 'hazard', 'seeping out', and 'critical situation'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but also some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take a estimate' instead of 'make an estimate', and repetition of phrases like 'washroom'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. These characteristics fit comfortably into the Band 6 descriptor, showing a sufficient range for the task while containing some noticeable lexical inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as 'I am writing this to bring to your kind attention that...' and 'It would be in the best interest for both of us...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'when yesterday I came back' (word order), 'it is same pipe' (missing article), 'a plumber should be called asap becasue' (run-on/punctuation issue and spelling of because), and 'take a estimate' (incorrect article). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 6.5 or 7.0.
