Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Building Manger,

I am writing this letter to address my problem with the elevators in our apartment. Being a responsible resident of our Villa Santa Residential Living, I would like to bring your immediate attention to this matter.

The elevators has not been working since last week and no action has been taken yet. I am drawing your attention to it because some residents like me live on higher level and it is very difficult for us to take stairs all the way to our floor. Some older adults has been facing the same problem despite experiencing health issues.

I would like you to bring a manual elevator untill this problem get solved. In the meantime, elevators could go under maintenence.

That would be great if you could visit the apartment and look into the issue and share some possible solutions in regards with this repair. It means a lot if you could advise few suggestions based on your experience to address this issue.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Anjali Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the problem is clearly described, identifying the broken elevators in the apartment building. Second, the student suggests actionable solutions, proposing the installation of a manual elevator and scheduling maintenance. Third, the building manager is explicitly asked to visit the apartment to inspect the issue and offer further advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to management, and the purpose is consistently maintained throughout. Ideas are relevant and fully developed, satisfying the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the statement of purpose and problem description to suggested solutions and the call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each major point allocated to its own distinct paragraph. Cohesive devices are managed well, although phrases like 'I am drawing your attention to it because' could be slightly more concise. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of ideas feels natural for a formal complaint or request letter, maintaining clarity from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal request letter, using terms such as 'responsible resident,' 'immediate attention,' and 'maintenance.' However, there are a few minor lexical and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'address my problem with' instead of 'report an issue with' and 'higher level' instead of 'higher floors.' Spelling is generally accurate, but there is a typo in 'untill' and 'manutenence' (though the latter appears as 'maintenence'). Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly with some less common items attempted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('Being a responsible resident..., I would like...'). However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors, particularly subject-verb agreement issues like 'The elevators has not been working' and 'older adults has been facing,' as well as 'untill this problem get solved' instead of 'gets solved.' Punctuation is generally acceptable, but these recurrent agreement errors prevent the grammar score from reaching higher bands.
