Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about the parking problem that I have been facing since two weeks.
It has been almost two weeks since I have not found a parking space inside our apartment's parking lot. I know our apartment has the system of free parking which is done on first come first serve basis, but this does not mean that we should be deprived of our parking rights. This is causing me immense problem as I have to park in the visitor area which is quiet far from the building.
In this situation, it is necessary to take a prompt action. This is because lately I have been noticing alot of new faces who are taking our building's parking spot. I am quite sure that must be the main reason why I am left no place to park. Moreover, I believe it is time to implement strict rules regarding this matter and against those who are misusing our flexible parking system
I request you to look into this matter more seriously and also if possible drop a visit at the location to the observe the ongoing situation.
I am hoping for your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Amy Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student has successfully addressed all bullet points of the task instructions. The problem is clearly described in the opening paragraphs, noting the difficulty in finding parking spaces inside the apartment's lot. The writer also clearly outlines what should be done about it, suggesting the implementation of strict rules against outsiders misusing the system. Furthermore, the letter successfully asks the building manager to visit the apartment to observe the ongoing situation. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint to a building manager, maintaining a polite yet firm stance throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, fully satisfying the requirements of a general training task 1 letter. Therefore, a solid band score is warranted for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introductory statement of purpose, followed by details of the problem and proposed solutions, a request for a visit, and a polite sign-off. The student uses cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Moreover', 'In this situation', and 'This is because', to link sentences and ideas together. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, allowing the reader to follow the narrative easily without getting confused. Although some transitions are slightly formulaic, the overall cohesion is well managed and appropriate for this type of correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'immense problem', 'prompt action', and 'flexible parking system'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'facing since two weeks' instead of 'for two weeks', and 'quiet far' instead of 'quite far'. There is also a spelling slip ('alot' instead of 'a lot'). Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or relative clauses like 'I know our apartment has the system of free parking which is done on first come first serve basis'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'facing since two weeks' (incorrect preposition and tense usage), 'since I have not found' (should be 'since I have been unable to find'), and 'to the observe' (extra article). However, these errors do not impede communication. The majority of sentences are understandable, and punctuation is generally handled well. Control of grammar is sufficient to support a competent overall performance.
