Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to lodge a complaint to the repair the problem of leakage in the apartment in which I am currently residing. I am facing a issue related to leakage in bathroom from last few days. I have tried to turn off the tap multiple time, as well as tried to fix that by myself, yet its leaking constantly.

Although at first I believed it could be a minor issue, I found the tap was broken completely. Therefore, replacing it is the only solution as I can not bear anymore leakage. Since it increases my water utility bill due to excessive consumption of water, I request you to fix this as sson as possible.

You are most welcomed in my apartment to inspect the problem. But for that let me know in advance at least 4 hours prior, so I will make sure to available by that time because I am having a busy work schedule nowadays.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Manish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly described the problem by stating "I am facing a issue related to leakage in bathroom from last few days." You also stated what should be done about it by explaining that "replacing it is the only solution" and requesting the manager to "fix this as sson as possible." Finally, you properly asked the building manager to visit your apartment by writing "You are most welcomed in my apartment to inspect the problem." The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager, and the purpose of the communication is apparent throughout. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is coherent overall and follows a logical structure. It is broken down into appropriate paragraphs that separate the introduction, the details of the problem, and the proposed solution along with the visit request. However, some cohesive devices and transitions are slightly awkward or mechanical, such as "Although at first I believed..." followed directly by "Therefore, replacing it..." There are also minor referencing and cohesion glitches, like "let me know in advance at least 4 hours prior, so I will make sure to available by that time." Despite these minor faults in cohesion, the logical progression is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as "currently residing," "excessive consumption," and "inspect the problem." However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that affect precision, such as writing "lodge a complaint to the repair the problem" instead of just "lodge a complaint regarding the problem," using the article incorrectly in "a issue," and misspelling "soon" as "sson." Word choices like "most welcomed" instead of "most welcome" also show occasional inaccuracies. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or dependent clauses in sentences like "Although at first I believed it could be a minor issue, I found the tap was broken completely." However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including "leakage in bathroom from last few days" (missing articles and preposition misuse), "turn off the tap multiple time" (pluralisation error), "yet its leaking" (missing apostrophe), and "so I will make sure to available" (missing verb). Punctuation and verb tense control show inconsistencies. Because these errors persist across sentences though they rarely impede meaning, a band score of 6.0 is appropriate.
