Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to discuss about the problem of water leakage in the bathroom which causes inconvenience for me.
From the last week, I have noticed a persistent leakage under the sink in the bathroom and water dropping on the floor and damaging the cabinet. Therefore, I need to turn off the supply of water in order to stop the leakage however, it made me uncomfortable for daily tasks, like washing my hands or brushing my teeth.
For resolving this issue, could you please talk to your plumber about this issue and resolve this issue as soon as possible before making this situation even more worse? If possible, could you please visit the apartment to check this problem by yourself and arrange for someone to help with this problem?
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter!
Yours faithfully,
Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt. You clearly describe the problem by mentioning a persistent water leakage under the sink that is damaging the cabinet. You also state what should be done about it by asking the manager to talk to a plumber and arrange for someone to help, and you explicitly ask the manager to visit your apartment to check the issue personally. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a letter to a building manager, and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organization. You use standard letter formatting with an appropriate opening ('Dear Manager,') and closing ('Yours faithfully, Ramandeep Kaur'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate your greeting, the description of the problem, your requested actions, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'however', and 'If possible' are employed to connect your ideas, although some transitions could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow your thoughts easily. Overall, this demonstrates clear coherence and appropriate cohesive management, fitting the Band 7.0 criteria.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, including phrases like 'persistent leakage', 'supply of water', and 'inconvenience for me'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations. For instance, writing 'discuss about the problem' is incorrect because 'discuss' does not require the preposition 'about'. Similarly, the phrase 'making this situation even more worse' contains a redundant use of 'more' before the comparative adjective 'worse'. Despite these minor flaws, your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly, which aligns well with a Band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('If possible, could you please visit the apartment...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors present. For example, 'From the last week' should be 'Since last week', and 'turn off the supply of water in order to stop the leakage however, it made me uncomfortable' contains a run-on structure with punctuation issues. Additionally, the preposition error in 'discuss about' affects grammatical accuracy. Because these errors occur alongside a reasonable attempt at complex sentences without impeding overall communication, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
